Description
Originally formed in 1994 to preserve the original turntable, the Centre has grown to offer Steam and Diesel days, special events, Shop and Café, and welcomes the occasional main line steam engine. Please check days we open and what’s happening.
Yeovil Railway Centre
The Southern Railway turntable installed in 1947 has been overhauled and visitors can watch the spectacle of large steam engines being turned and serviced.
A Peckett steam engine ‘Pectin’ is currently operational and provides the power for public rides on the demonstration line of around 1/3rd mile. Visitors ride in a historic brake van or in a coach. During these events, both Miniature and Model Railways are normally available together with light refreshments and the Shop. Demonstration of the turntable is often given.
There are several Industrial diesels on site, one of which is used on our Diesel Days.
Special events (including Model Railways, Tractors, Halloween and Characters) operate on a regular basis and of course our ever-popular Santa Specials are run in December – pre-booking essential to avoid disappointment. We offer pre-booked Driver Experience -see website.
Our Shop has ‘Thomas’ and other children’s gifts for sale as well as a large selection of books (new and second hand) and lots of other railway related items. The Shop opens every Sunday (except Christmas and New Year) from 10am to 12 noon and longer during most events.
A historic 1864 built Transfer Shed acts as home to our Visitor Centre and Café, Museum area and Signalling exhibiton. Can be hired for meetings etc.
The Charity is run by a friendly group of volunteers who endeavour to make our visitors as welcome as possible. Please remember to check our website of Facebook for when we are open and what’s happening!
